Deepak Chopra's second spiritual law is the Law of Giving. In order to get what you want, help others get what they want.
It's an interesting twist on the concept of karma. I have found this to be true in my life, and I naturally help others get what they want. But, I also think it's important to be available to help others figure out what it is they even want in the first place. Sometimes, we think we want something, but it's not at all what we thought it would be. The "if only"s take over, and we can't appreciate what we have now.
Part of being a good friend, a supportive person and a strong family member is to help others get what they want and need. When we do that for others, they will have a much stronger desire to help us when we need it, and, to feel like they've been understood.
The trick, I think, is doing this without being "addicted" to it. Getting caught up in the idea that all meaning comes from helping others and sacrificing our own happiness for that. It has to be in balance.
